Our Story
The Blue Room was started quite by accident in 2017, when Samhita (our founder) lent the space out to the experimental guitar-piano duo Tinctures to record their first album. As a thank you, Tinctures offered to play their first concert there, and The Blue Room was quickly labelled thus on Google Maps to make it easy for our first audience members to find. Samhita later realised that The Blue Room is the name of a sweet jazz standard (check out this a capella Chet Baker version!) Quite soon, music venues in Bangalore faced closure, and The Blue Room became a stopgap arrangement for musicians to pitch a little concert. Slowly, our space started to grow, learning from our experiments, being generously supported by the real silent stars of the show, Samhita’s parents, Asha and Nagaraj, who graciously accepted strangers and strange musicians invading their house most Sundays, allowing us to host over 200 events over the last 8 years. In this time, we have been blessed and lucky to host some of our icons, and been witness to unrecountably meaningful moments in concert with artists both at the peak of their careers, as well as those taking their first steps. The Blue Room exists to be a confluence of people, ideas, and musical traditions through concerts, workshops, and music lessons. We care about building communities based on warmth and compassion, the integrity of action and intent, open sharing of information, and that help must be offered if within one’s power. While music is the How, compassion towards all things is the Why, which informs all our work.
